Internationally recognized, carbon removal is a necessary tool to limit global wanning to 1.5°C, especially for offsetting emissions from sectors that are difficult to decarbonize. To this end, the European Union published the "EU Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Certification Regulation （EU/2024/3012） （CRCF Regulation）55 on December 6, 2024, aiming to establish a voluntary framework across the EU for certifying carbon removals, carbon farming, and carbon storage in products. By establishing EU quality standards and developing monitoring and reporting procedures, the CRCF Regulation hope to promote investment in innovative carbon removal technologies and sustainable carbon farming solutions, while addressing the issue of greenwashing. Although the Regulation came into effect on December 26 of the same year, they have not yet been fully implemented as the certification scheme and methodologies are still under discussion. However, the various methodological drafts currently being actively developed by the European Commission have received considerable criticism. Whether the CRCF Regulation can achieve its intended goals remains to be seen.
